Hint - It's about more than just cost saving.
Moissanite: On the Mohs scale, moissanite scores a 9.25, a very good score that makes it one of the hardest substances on earth, and very suitable for everyday wear as an engagement ring.
Diamond: Diamonds are the hardest known mineral and receive a 10 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness. Because of this exceptional score, diamonds are very durable and ideal for everyday wear. This contributes to their popularity as engagement rings’ center gemstones.
Moissanite: Brilliance Refraction Index - 2.65 - 2.69
Moissanites exhibit a different kind of brilliance than diamonds do, as their faceting pattern is different. The fiery, rainbow flashes emitted by moissanites are beloved by some, but others feel that moissanite’s heightened brilliance can create a “disco ball” effect, especially in sunlight. The bigger the moissanite, the more likely it is that the difference will be noticeable. Moissanite has a refractive index from 2.65 – 2.69, which is higher than a diamond.
Diamond: Brilliance Refraction Index - 2.42
A different type of brilliance is what makes it possible to distinguish a moissanite from a diamond. Diamonds reflect light in three different ways. The white light reflected back is referred to as brilliance, while the rainbow of colors refracted through the diamond is referred to as dispersion. The surface sparkle of a diamond, known as scintillation, is a third type of diamond light return. The combination of these three gives diamonds their famous sparkle.
Moissanites are graded similarly to Diamonds in terms of colour and clarity. Each supplier has their own grading system and terms used to describe the varying colour and clarity of their stones. Havilah are suppliers of both Charles & Colvard the original Moissanite and Evermore forever & endless Moissanite. We'll outline the Evermore Moissanite grading system below simply because we are offering our Black Friday discounts on the Evermore brand of Moissanite.
Evermore Moissanite Colour Grading
Evermore Moissanite has adopted an alphabetical colour spectrum from D to J in order to assist in calibrating Evermore Moissanite into 3 colour spectrums namely Evermore Radiant DEF (Colourless “C” to Near Colourless “NC”), Evermore Brilliance GH (Near Colourless “NC” to Very Slightly Tinted “VST”) and Evermore Classic IJ (Very Slightly Tinted “VST” to Slightly Tinted “ST”), with Evermore Radiant DEF (Colourless “C” to Near Colourless “NC”) as the highest grading for Evermore Moissanite. As you go down the scale or spectrum, the Evermore Moissanite starts to develop a yellow or brown tint.
Evermore Moissanite Clarity
LOUPE CLEAN (LC) describes Evermore Moissanite with no internal inclusions visible using 10x magnification. The gemstone may have small abrasions that are invisible to the naked eye — also graded as VVS.
EYE CLEAN (EC) is used to describe Evermore Moissanite with minor inclusion not visible to the naked eye. This grade will also apply to an external chip or abrasions invisible to the naked eye.
LIGHTLY INCLUDED (LI) minor noticeable inclusions that are noticeable with the naked eye.
MODERATELY INCLUDED (MI) large noticeable inclusions that can be easily seen with the naked eye and have an adverse effect on appearance.
HEAVILY INCLUDED (HI) inclusions that cover the majority of the stone and have a severe effect on appearance.
Grading
E.G.L (European Gemological Laboratory) South Africa
Evermore Moissanite appointed E.G.L. (European Gemological Laboratory) South Africa, in grading each Evermore Radiance and Evermore Brilliance Moissanite, 0.5ct and greater, according to the gemological standards set out for moissanite. A Unique serial number, traceable online on the E.G.L. web interface is issued for each stone graded.
