The Cut of the diamond does not only refer to the actual shape of the diamond, but also the quality of the cut, which affects the brilliance of the stone.

The most common shapes are Round, Pear, Princess, Emerald, Oval and Marquise.  

The round brilliant cut is the most sought after of all the shapes as this shape tends to exude the greatest brilliance.  A well cut diamond is facetted to reflect the greatest amount of light.
