This refers to the absence or presence of flaws in a diamond.  Natural diamonds are subject to certain imperfections which will affect the value of the stone.  The fewer and less obvious the imperfections or “inclusions”, the more rare it is, and therefore more valuable.  Most inclusions are not obvious to the naked eye, but visible through a 10x magnifying jeweller’s loupe.

FL: A stone would be graded as FL (flawless) if it has no imperfections inside or on the surface of the diamond, visible through a 10x magnifying loupe.

IF: (internally flawless) graded diamonds show no internal inclusions and very insignificant blemishes on the diamond’s surface.  These inclusions would be hard to spot, even with a loupe.

VVS1-VVS2: These diamonds are still excellent quality stones, with the inclusions being very, very slight. These flaws are hardly visible, even under a loupe.

VS1-VS2: The diamonds falling into this category are very slightly included, with imperfections barely visible to the naked eye.

SI1-SI3: Diamonds graded as slightly included would have defects that are relatively easy to identify with a loupe, and also possible but less easily with the naked eye.

I1-I3: These stones have inclusions which can often be visible without the use of a loupe. These flaws will affect the brilliance of the diamond.
